HIV / AIDS initiatives are one of the important targeted intervention areas of BCT in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu region. All these areas are having a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS.
TI Program for Female Sex Workers (FSW):
In support of KSAPS, project implemented in the Bangalore Urban Zone-V with an objective to halt & reverse the HIV/AIDS epidemics among Female Sex Workers (FSWs) in Tumkur district & to bring a behavior change in their sexual health and reducing the incidence of HIV among 3280 FSWs by providing knowledge on STI/HIV/AIDS, condom usage & promotion of female condoms via social marketing and access to services of STI. This year individuals benefited via regular contact & clinic visits, 5460 women screened for Syphilis, 1024 high risk groups tested for HIV & distributed 3,35,289 condoms in the Bangalore Urban Zone -5 (Yeshwantpur, Peenya, Dasarahalli, Hebbal, Narayanpura, Yelahanka & Jakkur).
TI Program for Migrants:
In partnership with KSAPS, under the targeted intervention program for Migrants from Garment & Construction Sector, project implemented in and around Yeshwantpur, Yelahanka & Nelamangala, urban areas of Bangalore, with a focus on the increased condom usage by migrant workers with their sexual partners both casual & regular and to reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections among the migrant workers both from the garment & construction sector.
During 2014-15, various sites were covered and 1,70,000+ Migrants both from Garment & Construction sectors (I&II) were reached out. Nearly 34954+ migrants identified as High Risk Migrants were educated on STIs/HIV/AIDS. Around 1000 individuals diagnosed & treated for STIs. On an average 1000 individuals screened HIV and 2-3 cases reported positive, were linked to ART. 5390+ condoms were distributed for free.
Targeted Intervention for Truckers:
In partnership with APSACS, project implemented in April, 2014 in Autonagar Stretch under Vanasthalipuram, Ranga Reddy District along with Pedamberpet of Ranga Reddy, Kothapet, Kukatpally, Kompally of Hyderabad District, Isnapur of Medak District, Shadnagar and Jadcherla of Mehebubnagar District, with a focus to arrest the spread of HIV/AIDS among the Long Distance Truckers. This year, BCT is able to reach our 1,66,281 truckers through the IPC and Mid-media activities, whereas through medical team, we are able to reach out 15,966 cases for general check-up and 1563 screened for STIs, were provided proper treatment with counseling. “Fit for the Road†a program supported with Eye,
Blood Grouping, Blood Sugar screening, HIV test and general check-up including specialized services of Doctors for Cardiology, Eye Care, Skin, Orthopedic, Physiotherapy and Diabetic care offered to the truckers of Express Road Ways for their better health. Around 165 spectacles were distributed free in eye camps with support of Lions Club, (Hyderabad South), Lions Club (Greater Anand), Lions Club (Kothapet) and Bharat Petroleum Limited. In a similar project supported by APSACS for Truckers at Warangal, (Naidu petrol Pump, Hunter Road, Fruit Market), Andhra Pradesh. This year, BCT team were able reach out 22872 truckers through IPC, 4186 truckers via Khushi Clinic, 341 truckers treated for STI, 966 truckers voluntarily tested for HIV through Mobile Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre (MICTC),6 reported HIV+, were further linked to ART for treatment & medication.
TI Truckers Program – Nelamangala:
The project implemented in 8th Mile Check post covering at a stretch of 12 km on NH4, Nelamangala Urban area of Bangalore in partnership with KSAPS. The project aims at enhancing the knowledge about HIV among the long distance truck drivers and the helpers, whose average trip is more than 800 KMs one way. The major objectives of the program are: To promote safer sexual behavior and practices, use of condoms and to reduce the incidence of STIs among truckers through clinical interventions & to create an enabling environment by involving different stakeholders in their activities at intervention locations for the program sustainability. This year, around 114866 truckers covered & benefited by BCT-South through Health awareness camps, IPC, Street plays & games, 52 Exhibitions, 08 Film shows & Clinical interventions via Khushi clinic.
Foster Care Programme (Orphan and Vulnerable Children): Inchara Phase II Program
A social Protection Program implemented by BCT in partnership with Deshpande Foundation for people living with HIV (PLHIV) and their families in HUBLI-DHARWAD district of North Karnataka. The project aims to protect and support the HIV (infected & affected people) and further linking them with the Government schemes through creating awareness at district & taluka level, benefiting the target groups through federations of PLHIV. This year, 500+ PLHIV & Families were benefited through awareness camps and INR 20, 00, 000 leveraged from the Government schemes. An application for 216 children lodged under OVC (orphan and vulnerable children) Scheme and INR 17, 92,800 leveraged for the year. Through an advocacy program recruited successfully a PLHIV as Aaya at Anganwadi centre and this helped her in generating INR 36,000 per year.
